hermal ribbon printers use a head that comes into contact with the ribbon. Ribbon printing produces an image that lasts over time on the surface of the label and is ideal for applications requiring long life.

irect thermal transfer printers also use heads that generate the print with heat, but do not require a ribbon. The printed area is created simply by applying heat to the surface to be printed. The result is that the print lasts much less than that with the ribbon, therefore it is used for labels that have a short shelf life, such as those for the logistics sector, or for bar codes.
